Why attestation?

Attestation, I know that, this is a common word .And it is known to all people.Getting signature from a gazette officer to prove that the documents submitted are true,is what is known as attestation.

Once, people used to make copy of a document using typewriter .Then these copies were attested by officers to confirm its truthfulness. Presently the copies can be made using scanners , printers and Xerox machines.And the copies produced by them are as same as the original.

When someone has to enroll themselves in a college ,they have to submit certain documents necessary ,but why are these documents and certificates  want to be attested, when they are same as the orginals. Moreover, at the time of admission anyway the colleges are surely going to get the originals.
 It sounds so simple, but getting attestation , is a big thing for rural children,.In rural areas , when the children are asked for attestation they have to go, on errands to get them.And sometimes they have to pay for it too.

So, I think, method of attestation is a unnecessary burden and  can be dropped,making  the process much more swifter and easy for all.
